A new peak in coronavirus victims was reported from Germany today: Within 24 hours, 410 new deaths were reported to the Robert Koch Institute (RKI), bringing the total to 14,771. Against this background, the Federal Government and the state governments are today discussing tighter measures to relax the rules for Christmas.
The highest number of deaths to date was recorded in Germany in mid-April with 315 within one day. The number of new infections has now risen slightly: According to the RKI figures from this morning, 18,633 new infections were recorded within 24 hours – a good 1,000 cases more than a week ago.
Compared to the peak of 23,648 reported cases, however, a decrease has been recorded. Since the beginning of the pandemic, the RKI has counted 961,320 confirmed infections with Sars-CoV-2.
Christmas rules planned
While other countries – including Austria -do not still have plans for the Christmas season, the German states have already decided on their measures for the holidays, including New Year’s Eve. An “exceptional phase” is planned between 23 December and 1 January. The rules still have to be agreed with Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU) today.
